#BringBackOurGirls: Boko Haram Overruns Town of Chibok in Nigeria

The Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram attacked and seized the town where it kidnapped more than 200 girls in April, officials said Friday. The militant group returned to Chibok and launched a deadly assault to overrun the town on Thursday night, Borno State Senator Ahmed Zanna told NBC News. The kidnap of the girls sparked a global campaign centered around the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, but attempts to rescue them have proved fruitless.

Boko Haram has already overrun swaths of Nigeria's northeast and conducted countless attacks and kidnappings in its bid to establish an Islamic state. In addition to seizing Chibok, the militants also attacked and overran the towns of Hong and Gombi in neighboring Adamawa state on Thursday, Zanna said by telephone. "There were many killings but it is impossible to say how many at this stage," he said. The attacks were first reported in the Nigerian press and by the AFP news agency.

Turkey: Attackers of U.S. Sailors in Istanbul Will 'Pay the Price'

ISTANBUL - Turkey's Foreign Minister on Friday described an assault on U.S. sailors in Istanbul this week as reprehensible and vowed that the attackers would "pay the price for their actions." Members of the nationalist Turkish Youth Union attacked three U.S. sailors on a crowded street in Istanbul on Wednesday, shouting "Yankee go home," throwing paint and trying to pull hoods over their heads. Video footage was later posted on the group's website. Twelve people were detained but released by an Istanbul court on Thursday. However, they could still face charges for causing insult and injury.

"The relevant Turkish authorities are conducting a full investigation... We will take all necessary precautions to ensure that such isolated incidents do not occur again," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusolgu said during a visit to Australia.
Cavusoglu offered his sympathies to the three sailors, who were not injured. "Through thick and thin, the people of Turkey welcome them and all their brothers and sisters in arms, into their homes and hearts as long-standing friends and partners," Cavusoglu added. The U.S. embassy condemned the attack.

Swedish Armed Forces Offers Proof a Submarine Violated Its Waters

Sweden said Friday that it has proof a foreign submarine violated its territorial waters. The Scandinavian country hadlaunched an extensive Cold War-style hunt last month after detecting "underwater activity" but found no trace at the time. But on Friday, the military released an underwater image taken by a navy vessel that it said showed conclusive proof of a submarine track on the seabed. "A foreign power has violated Swedish territorial integrity," the Swedish Armed Forces said in a statement. "The gravity of this is obvious."
This conclusion was based on the seabed photograph, according to the statement, as well as high-level sensor data and a blurry image taken by a member of the public last month showing "the kind of spray that arises when water is pushed out of scuttles at the top of a submarine."
"There is no doubt, we have excluded all other explanations," the statement added. Sweden has never named the country it believes responsible for the alleged violation in the Stockholm archipelago, but widespread speculation of Russian involvement was met by continued denials from Moscow, which at one point calling the episode a "tragicomedy."

A big cat that was spotted near Disneyland Paris — sparking a search that involved scores of police, soldiers and a helicopter — is not a tiger after all, French officials said Friday. Authorities are now referring to the elusive animal as an unidentified feline.
The creature was first spotted Thursday by a local woman in a parking lot and was later seen crossing a highway. About a dozen troops were tapped to help scores of French police officers armed with tranquilizer guns hunt for it. Residents of Montevrain, about 25 miles east of Paris, were warned to stay inside it was caught. The mayor of Montevrain said the search teams ringing the area hope to take the animal alive.

US won’t sell fighter helicopters to Nigeria, Read Why

The United States has defended its refusal to sell cobra helicopters to Nigeria, saying the Federal Government is free to buy fighter jets from any other country. “Nigeria has purchased helicopters that originated in countries other than the US and nothing in our decision prevents Nigeria from obtaining weapons and equipment from other sources,” its State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said on Wednesday. Psaki was responding to questions from journalists on the allegations by the   Nigerian Ambassador to the US, Prof. Adebowale Adefuye, that Washington declined to sell lethal arms to Nigeria. Adefuye had also told members of the Council on Foreign Relations on Monday that Washington was not doing enough to assist Nigeria in combating the Boko Haram insurgency in North-East zone of the country. He said, “The U.S. government has up till today refused to grant Nigeria’s request to purchase lethal equipment that would have brought down the terrorists within a short time on the basis of the allegations that Nigeria’s defence forces have been violating human rights of Boko Haram suspects when captured or arrested. “We find it difficult to understand how and why, in spite of the U.S. presence in Nigeria, with their sophisticated military technology, Boko Haram should be expanding and becoming more deadly.” But Psaki said that the US refused to sell the helicopters to Nigeria due to concerns about the ability of the military to use and maintain them. The cobra is a combat aircraft with the ability to climb at the rate of 8.2metres per second. It is equipped with a 20 mm M197 3-barrelled Gatling cannon in the A/A49E-7 turret (750 rounds ammo capacity). Psaki said there were ongoing concerns about the Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations, adding that these had been discussed with the Nigerian authorities. The State Department spokeswoman added, “Earlier this year, we denied the transfer of some cobra attack helicopters to Nigeria due to concerns about Nigeria’s ability to use and maintain this type of helicopter in its effort against Boko Haram and ongoing concerns about the Nigerian military’s protection of civilians when conducting military operations. We shared those concerns with Nigeria before this decision and subsequent to it. “We’ll continue to look for ways to deepen our cooperation with Nigeria to help it acquire the systems and skills needed to restore peace and security. But obviously, we’ve provided a great deal of assistance over the past several months.” Psaki said Washington would not have raised concerns on human rights abuses by the Nigerian military “if we didn’t feel and others didn’t feel that they were warranted.” She assured the Nigerian government that the US   was ready to help Nigeria train and improve the effectiveness of its military. Urging the Federal Government to investigate allegations of abuses by the military, Psaki stated that the US valued its long standing relationship with Nigeria. She said that Washington had been offering various forms of assistance to Nigeria, including sharing intelligence with its armed forces . Psaki said, “Let me just lay out the facts of our assistance: Over the past six months, the United States has started sharing intelligence with Nigeria, began training a new army battalion and held numerous high-level discussions with Nigerian authorities on additional measures to best address the Boko Haram threat. “We have also provided and approved sales of military equipment to its armed forces. These decisions are made, of course, after careful scrutiny to ensure they conform with the US law.” Our correspondents could not get the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, to speak on the issue as calls to his mobile telephone did not connect. Also, Olukolade did not respond to a text message sent to him. When contacted, the Director, Communications Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Ogbole Ahmedu-Ode, said, “I am in transit right now and I am hearing about this from you for the first time, I can’t comment on it. You may ask the Defence Headquarters.’’

[PHOTOS] World’s Tallest Man And Shortest Man Meet For The First Time

world tallest and shortest man
The world’s tallest and shortest men came face to shin on Thursday to celebrate the 10th annual Guinness World Records Day as people across the globe tried to break all manner of weird and wacky world records, including banging heads, catching spears and throwing thongs.
Turkey’s Sultan Kosen, who stands 2.51 metres (eight feet, nine inches) tall, met with Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, who measures just 55 centimetres (21 and a half inches).
Kosen, a 31-year-old farmer, stooped down to shake the world’s biggest hands — 28.5 centimetres (11.22 inches) — with 74-year-old Dangi opposite the Houses of Parliament in London.
“I was very interested how tall he was going to be, about how far up my legs he would go, and of course once I saw him I realised how tiny he was,” Kosen told AFP.
He said meeting Chandra was “amazing”, although he admitted bending the long, long way down for photographs was difficult.
“I do have problems with my knees so if I stand too long I do get tired,” he said.

Meanwhile Dangi, a primordial dwarf who makes placemats, is the shortest adult ever certified by Guinness World Records.
“I was very pleased to see the tallest man in the world, I was curious to meet my extreme opposite,” he told AFP.

7 Signs To Know If You Have Ever Been In Love

The big “L” as we all know has often been mistaken for a lot of other emotions such as infatuation or lust. The feeling of being in love however goes beyond liking someone or wanting to have sex with them. Not to confuse love for any other emotion, here are seven signs to tell you if you are in love or have ever been in love.

You are Addicted to this Person:

The first stage of love is usually the obsessive part when you can’t stop thinking about them or get them out of your mind. It is like being in a state of euphoria and even scientist agree that there is usually a change in the brain. There is activity in the anterior cingulated which is the area of the brain linked to obsessive thinking, which is a classic experience when people are falling in love (Aron, Fisher, Mashek, Strong, & Brown, 2005). It is good to note that as your relationship progresses however, you will less likely have more control of your emotions and the obsessive thinking about them reduces.

Distances Makes Your Heart Grow Fonder:

When you are in love with somebody and they have to be apart from you for a reason, it is only natural that you miss them and wish they were with you. Your level of commitment to the relationship will determine how much you miss them. There is the feeling of not being complete when your lover is not around and nothing makes you feel as serene as when you and your partner are together.

You Grow as a Person:

When you are in love with someone, you begin to feel more confident with yourself, your sense of self grows and you also pick up some new traits and characteristics from them. You either notice these changes yourself or others around you can tell the difference because the things you care about, your habits, how you spend your time or all of these is subject to the influence of a new romantic partner.

You Have Thoughts of a Future Together:
When you are thinking about your future and this person plays a dominant role in it, then you are truly in love. You can’t imagine a life without your loved one and as you make plans for the future, you always factor them into the equation. When you start using words like ‘we’ and not “I,” be certain your emotions are strong enough to be considered love.

You Willing Compromise for Your Partner:

One of the big signs that you are in love is when you are willing to make compromises for your partner. You make decisions that you know will make your partner happy even if it brings you out of your comfort zone. Since your partner takes interest in a particular thing, you are likely to pick interest in it as well but in making compromises it is always important to remember that it is a two way thing and one shouldn’t completely lose oneself.

You Get Jealous but Trust your Partner:

Having feelings of jealousy in a true love affair is not bad for a relationship. People who are jealous tend to be more committed to relationships (Rydell, McConnell, & Bringle, 2004). However don’t be possessive or suspicious of your partner as this will breed distrust. When you are able to have a healthy dose of jealous but still completely have faith in your partner, then it’s true love.

You Want Your Friends and Family to Like this Person:

Family is very important to the average Nigerian as most families are close knit. When you are in love with someone, you badly want your parents to like them, you want them to get along with your friends and basically have the approval of others in your life.  Since you will be spending a lot of time together, you are usually quick to raise good points in their favour in front of your family or support them among other people you care about.

Local Hunters Kill 80 Boko Haram Members, Recapture Maiha Town

At least 80 members of the Boko Haram sect were reportedly killed n Wednesday in a battle with local hunters in Maiha Local Government Area of Adamawa State. One of the hunters, who spoke in Yola, said that the capture of Mahia town on Monday by the insurgents irked the local hunters in the town to mobilize other hunters in their neighbouring communities to team up against the insurgents in order to recapture the town. He said the hunters fought gallantly, killed 80 of the insurgents and recaptured Mahia local government headquarters from them. The hunter said it is the military authorities that are preventing them from dislodging the insurgents because they are not constituted security forces and cannot be trusted with the country’s safety. He appealed to the military authorities to scrutinize them and authorize them to face the Boko Haram insurgents in a battle which he believed that the hunters will defeat the insurgents. “If the military can authorize us and give us backups, we will wipe out the insurgents because we know their hideouts and if it is JuJu, we also have it and we can identify them. “Boko Haram fear us because they know what we can do; let the military leave us with Boko Haram and see what is going to happen. We took advantage of the fact that the soldiers have fled the area and we used the opportunity to kill and chase some of the insurgents out of Mahia,” he said
